Your role in crime prevention
Even if you haven’t been directly affected by crime you don’t have
to look far to see the problems it causes. And you may find it a lot closer to
home than you think.
It could be something as simple as a smashed-up phone box. It may be graffiti
at your local bus stop. Or it could be a lot worse. Perhaps you know of someone
who has been mugged or perhaps your house has been burglarized.
In any case, everyday someone in your community is counting the cost of crime.
It could be your next door neighbor or someone even closer.
Why wait until your family members or friends become another set of statistics
before doing what you can to help take criminals off the streets?
Crime Stoppers allows you to look out for your family, friends and keep your
community safe without putting yourself at risk.
Crime Stoppers is not part of the police force. We do work with them, just as
we work with businesses, the media and the local community for a common goal
- a safer community.
All you have to do is share any information that you have, using the anonymous
number, 1-888-577-TIPS (8477) or email us at tips@888577tips.org.
You can also use our online TIPS Form. You will not be
asked your name, your call is not traced or recorded and you won’t
have to give a statement or go to court.
The only person who knows that you’ve called is you, the caller. That is
the way it stays.
So don’t let anybody frighten or embarrass you into silence. Stand up for
yourself without counting the cost. You’ll be doing what’s right.
Below are some answers to some common questions and you can also see exactly
how Crime Stoppers works:
How do I know that my call is not being traced?
Crime Stoppers cannot use any tracing devices whatsoever.
What if the number appears on my phone bill?
If you telephone from a land line or public telephone using the 800 number
then the number will never appear on your phone bill.
Who am I talking to you when I call Crime Stoppers?
Your call is received by a trained Crime Stoppers call handler who will record
your information and ensure that is passed on to the police.
What if others find out what
I’ve done?
The only way that anyone will know if you have
called Crime Stoppers is if you tell them. That’s
the way it’s been from the beginning of the
Crime Stoppers program. Without that trust we simply
couldn’t exist.
What do Crime Stoppers contribute to the community?
Crime Stoppers operates throughout regional volunteer
groups throughout the state and country. These groups
spend their time promoting Crime Stoppers and making
more people aware of the 1-888-577-TIPS
(8477) number
in case they ever feel they need to use it.
Local Crime Stoppers initiatives focus on topics related
to crime that affect the local community.
How could Crime Stoppers help in my community?
You may want to tackle specific issues in your school
with Crime Stoppers help. Why not start your own awareness
campaign in your school? By contacting your local organization
you can make sure you receive free posters and other
promotional material to put up in your school to help
spread the word.
If you want to become even more involved we can put
you in touch with your local Crime Stoppers representative
and you can make a difference in your local community,
by helping to come up with new ideas for campaigns
in your area.
Feel free to contact
us by phone or email.
